Tents & Membrane Structures

Tents and membrane structures erected on State owned property require a permit. Location may require additional registration and approval through University Events.

Regular Size Tents

Applicants should complete and submit a UNC Asheville Tent Permit Application at a minimum of 72 hours prior to the installation date for review.

This applies to the following regular size tents:

  • Tents less than 1,800 sq ft without sides
  • Tents with sides and less than 800 sq ft
Large Tents & Large Tents with sides

Require approval from the State Construction Office (SCO). There are additional requirements for tents greater the 800 sq ft (with sides) and any tent greater than 1,800 sq ft

  • Application must be submitted 8 weeks prior to installation, therefore documents should be submitted to EH&S 9 weeks prior to installation for review.
  • Submit a standard UNC Asheville Tent Permit Application
  • After review, you will receive a follow up email with fillable copy of the SCO required permit. Click here for a completed Tent Permit Submittal Sample
  • Provide detailed site and floor plan to include but not limited to:
    • Site Plan: Show 20 ft wide fire lane and 20 ft from other structures, lot lines, building lines, parked vehicles, internal combustion engines, etc.
    • Floor Plan: Show layouts of tables, chairs, furniture, platform and equipment. 44 inches wide clear aisle shall be maintained for egress. Show location of portable fire extinguisher(s), No smoking sign, Occupant load sign and exits (if the structure has sides)
    • Confirmation documentation that structures are certified as composed of flame resistance material or treated with flame retardant to meet flame propagation performance criteria of NFPA 701
    • Emergency Exits (for tents with sides)
    • Calculation of occupant load (occupant load shall utilize Load Table 1004.1.2 NCBC 2018: Standing only: 5 sf per person. Seating only: 7 sf per person. Seating at Table: 15 sf per person)
  • Approval from the State Construction Office (compliant with 2018 NC Fire Code). Campus Operations will submit final packet of required paperwork to the SCO on behalf of the University.
